CGC seminar at COP30: Nature on Balance Sheet -Process and Roadmap-

On November 11, 2025, the Center for Global Commons hosted a seminar, Nature on the Balance Sheet: Process and Roadmap, at the Japan Pavilion during the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.

Session Summary
Due to our economic and social activities, seven out of nine planetary boundaries have already been transgressed. In order to restore our sustainable relationship with the planet and ensure transition to a nature-positive economy, it is critical that we recognize the full value of natural capital, which has been regarded as free and has been exploited, and integrate it into our economic decision-making. This session introduced the “Nature on the Balance Sheet (NoBS)” initiative implemented by the Center for Global Commons in collaboration with its international partners. It discussed the process and roadmap for developing international rules that recognize natural capital as an investable asset to be reflected in the balance sheet. The expert panelists presented the latest science on the tipping point of the Amazon ecosystem, practical experience as a forest asset owner, agribusiness providing science-based solutions, challenges to valuing tropical rainforests, and the role of investment and policy in accelerating the NoBS process. Supported by perspectives of Asia and the Global South, the session affirmed the importance of “Nature on the Balance Sheet” initiative for system transformation and helped to disseminate the debate internationally.
